My New Xterra

2005 Nissan Xterra

This page is about my 2005 Nissan Xterra. I purchased it new from Warden-Martin in Savoy on March 7th 2005. I've been waiting for the 2005 Xterras to come out since July of 2004. This page shows the installation of my firefighting and storm chasing equipment.

So far I absolutely love my new X. Its speedy, comfortable, and feels like it was build for me to put my equipment in. I absolutely love it!

I've got just about everything installed in my new X. The many months of planning is finally paying off.

UPDATE: I tested the circuit that runs all of my lights. I had it fused at 30 amps, but the meter only registered 4 amps with everything on. I replaced the 30 amp fuse with a 15 amp fuse.

Equipment installed:

  • Dual talon LED emergency light (dash)
  • 400 Watt inverter
  • TM-G707A dual band transceiver.
  • 4x TIR3 Blue LED lights
  • 2x Able2 Sho-Me amber lights
  • 911EP TD28 amber traffic director
  • Switch Panel

Yet to install:

  • Jotto desk (tripod model)
  • Custom video camera mount
  • Custom storage system for storm chasing

All power wires (positive and negative) are fused at the battery

I've added two switches shown here. The left one turns on a relay to enable the DC-AC Inverter. The right switch enables the entire lighting system via another relay.

Shown here is my radio and switch panel. The radio is mounted using velcro and double sided rubberized tape. The switch panel controls all of the lights on my X.

Dual talon in action. I have a quick disconnect switch so I can put it in my wife's vehicle.

K400NMO mount with SBB-2 antenna.

TIR3's and TD28 mounted with custom made brackets.

K412SNMO antenna mount and TIR3.

View of TD28. This light is unbelievable.

I had to drill two holes behind the tail light to bring the antenna, TIR3, and TD28 wires inside. The rear hatch would not seal otherwise.

Kenwood TM-G707A mounted in the rear of my X. I will make this look better in the coming days.

TD28 in action...

Front amber Able2 Show-Me LED flashers. I purchased the random pattern flasher but I do not like it. The patterns suck because only two out of the seven flash patterns alternate the lights.

Side view of switch panel. I will be adding a cover so the wires will not be visible.

I've found that the TIR3's are brighter than the TD28 modules.
